Next Generation Fellowships (NGF)
Applications for 2012 are now closed
Each year, the
Centre aims to fund one Next Generation Fellowship. We are
particularly keen to promote the prospects of high calibre individuals pursuing
innovative research falling within the remit of the Centre.
Eligibility
Candidates should normally be within 5 years of the award of their PhD (due allowance will be made for those whose career has been affected for personal reasons). Applicants must display evidence of academic excellence, a strong research record, and the ability to perform independent research.
The Fellowship
A Fellowship is usually of three years duration (renewable in exceptional circumstances up to a maximum of five years). Fellowship holders are expected to apply for a Senior Research Fellowship from a research council or other funding body, or a faculty position during the course of their tenure. The scheme is open to UK, EU and Overseas PhD graduates.
The Fellowship will provide flexible funding of up to £50,000 per annum, although the Managers will take into account other sources of research funding available to the Fellow when making the award. The funding will provide for their personal salary on the Research Associate scale (£27,183 to £33,432), research consumables, equipment and conference travel. The Centre is not in a position to pay bench fees or access charges to core equipment or any additional charges. A Fellow will be expected to provide the Managers with an annual report outlining research progress and accounting for expenditure.
Successful candidates may hold their Fellowship in any department within the University or affiliated institutes, although dedicated laboratory space is available within the Centre. Fellows will be expected to contribute fully to the activities of the Centre and to their host department.
Application procedure
Applicants should first identify a Sponsor from the Membership of the Centre who will act as their mentor if they are awarded a Fellowship. After discussing their proposed project with him/her they should submit:
- a curriculum vitae that includes a brief review of their academic career
- a summary of the research project, including brief details of how the candidate sees their research developing in the longer term (maximum 3,000 words excluding references)
- an estimated financial breakdown of the costs for each year applied for, including their salary, consumables, equipment and travel costs
- three confidential academic references in sealed envelopes
- a letter of support from the Sponsor
