Every year, millions of families face infertility and pregnancy complications. Miscarriage affects up to 12% of pregnancies, preeclampsia occurs in 2–8%, and stillbirth claims over two million lives annually. These are devastating statistics, yet our understanding of early human development and placental biology remains incomplete. Without deeper insight into these mechanisms, we cannot offer effective interventions, nor can we prevent or treat many of the conditions whose origins often lie in the earliest stages of our development.

Every safe pregnancy depends on a healthy placenta. Through pioneering research and world-class training, the Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research is working to improve outcomes for mothers and babies around the world.

Our world-leading excellence in research and training is sustained by the generosity of our alumni, friends and supporters. Help us advance placental research and support the next generation of researchers working to improve pregnancy outcomes.

We welcome donations at all levels, as well as gifts that complement or unlock matched funding from the University, colleges and other partners.

  • £750 can support a student or fellow attend a specialist conference or training course, helping them build collaborations and bring new ideas back to Cambridge.
  • £1,500 can fund a bursary for an international participant to attend our world-renowned Placental Biology Course.
  • £5,000 can help a PhD student or Next Generation Fellow complete a key set of experiments within a strategic, collaborative research project.
