Our research
The placenta is essential for a healthy pregnancy and has lasting effects on the health of both mother and child. Problems with placental development and function can contribute to miscarriage, stillbirth, pre-eclampsia, fetal growth restriction and preterm birth. The placenta also shapes the environment in which the fetus develops, with effects that may extend into later life for both the child and pregnant individual.
However, many aspects of how the placenta develops and functions, and how placental dysfunction contributes to complications of fertility and pregnancy, remain poorly understood.
Our approach
Our research centres on the trophoblast, the first cell lineage to form as the embryo develops and the main cell type of the placenta. Trophoblast cells form the interface between maternal and fetal tissues. They help establish the maternal blood supply to the placenta, exchange nutrients and signals, produce hormones and interact with the maternal immune system.
Placental biology brings together developmental biology, immunology, physiology, genetics and clinical research. The Loke CTR connects researchers from across these disciplines so that fundamental discoveries can inform questions about fertility, pregnancy and lifelong health.

Role of the placenta and related cell types in development
Understanding mechanisms regulating trophoblast specification, differentiation and crosstalk with related cell types. An emphasis on a critical “black box” period of development during the first and second trimesters.
Extrinsic and intrinsic factors that influence placental development and function
Investigating emerging pathogens, diet, environmental cues, maternal physiological and psychological factors, microbiome, genetic variation and ancestry as modifiers of placental development and function.
Role of abnormal placental development and function in determining pregnancy outcomes and lifelong health
Translating the knowledge gained from basic science research into novel predictive, preventative, and therapeutic interventions.
