Dr Miriam Baumgarten

My research focuses on translational reproductive science, particularly early pregnancy complications and novel diagnostics in women’s health. I aim to bridge clinical observation with underlying biological mechanisms using advanced molecular approaches to improve diagnosis and patient care.

As Principal Investigator of the first Phase II investigational medicinal product trial in pregnant patients at The Rosie Maternity Hospital, I have gained extensive experience in international clinical research, regulation, and trial governance. Collaboration with the Wellcome Sanger Institute enabled single-cell transcriptomic studies of implantation, including development of a cellular atlas of ectopic pregnancy, providing insights into abnormal implantation.

My work now extends to placenta accreta spectrum, integrating molecular data with clinical phenotyping to understand pathological placentation. I also co-lead a Wellcome Leap-funded cohort study investigating menstrual fluid as a non-invasive diagnostic tool.

Future research will address recurrent pregnancy loss, the endometrial microbiome, and menopause-related cardiovascular changes.
