Epidemiological data provides evidence associating placental dysfunction with increased risk of post-pregnancy maternal obesity, dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance, hypertension,
cardiovascular disease and mortality. However, the biological mechanism underlying this long-term impact remains unknown. I intend to use a novel mouse model of fetal growth
restriction (FGR) to identify alteration of substances secreted from the placenta into maternal circulation, explore their effect on gene expression in maternal end-organs and characterise the resulting development of maternal metabolic syndrome over time. I believe that a wider understanding of the regulatory process altering metabolic homeostasis inflicted by FGR, holds great potential for clinical interventions critical to maternal health.
